New Zealand has some of the highest rates of allergies in the world, and we are proud to offer a specialised service for allergy sufferers for the Top of the South.
We see anybody who suspects they have an allergy, including sufferers of allergic rhinitis (hayfever), food allergies, venom allergies (bees and wasps), eczema, asthma, and recurrent hives and swelling (urticaria and angioedema). We see both children and adults.
We are particularly excited to offer desensitisation to sufferers of allergic rhinitis (hayfever). Desensitisation is the only treatment that actually alters the natural course of the disease for allergy sufferers: http://www.allergy.org.au/patients/allergy-treatment/immunotherapy
Dr James Chisnall is a Specialist General Practitioner (FRNZCGP), caring for children and adults, with post graduate training in both Allergic Disease (University of Western Sydney) and Child Health (University of Otago). James maintains a close working relationship with New Zealand’s small group of Allergy Specialists, so you are in good hands. Here is a link to Dr Chisnall participating in a panel discussing allergies in New Zealand on National Radio, originally broadcast 17th January 2015 http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/the-weekend/audio/20163902/hay-fever-and-environmental-allergies
What to expect?
You will receive an initial consultation of 45 minutes with James. In order to ensure best care a referral note from your GP is highly recommended. You and your GP will receive a comprehensive letter regarding the consult, and an individualised action plan for the allergy.
A follow up appointment will then be arranged to discuss any investigations and progress. The follow up appointment may be in person or by phone/Skype, depending on circumstances.
Accurate diagnosis is paramount (for instance one in three people think they have a food allergy, yet the true figure is <10% for children and 2-3% for adults).
We will only offer you modern scientifically validated allergy diagnosis.
You may also be referred to an allied health professional, such as a specialist nurse or dietician, as James works as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Please note enrolled General Practice patients of Greenwood Health will receive a different service, so if you are enrolled enquire directly with reception.
What not to expect
Unfortunately in New Zealand when it comes to allergy services it is very much a case of buyer beware! We will not offer you tests and treatment of dubious benefit.

You don’t need to take our word for it. Allergy NZ, a non profit patient advocacy group, has vetted these services for you: http://www.allergy.org.nz/Allergy+help/Allergy+specialists+and+other+useful+contacts.html

What is the cost?
An initial consult is $240 + gst ($276), and follow up is $160 + gst ($184).
Payment will need to be received at the time of booking the consultation. Cancellations less than 48 hours before the appointment will not be refunded.
Desensitisation costs are separate and vary according to the allergy and type of treatment.
